I had lived at Hickory and 12th for a year before it dawned on me that "Hey! I live in the country!" It was right after I started looking for hickory trees. I guess it took me a year to get over selling, downsizing, and moving.

But now, my eyes were opened, and an idea took form. Could I reproduce a little slice of the culture of my earlier days? Could I start a vegetable garden? Could I buy much of my food locally produced? Most of all, would these actions bring about the sense of satisfaction and of being 'right with the world' that prevailed during my childhood and as a young wife and mother? It's hard to say - but I'm going to try to find out.
Taking the front door of my 'cottage' as a starting point, I'm going to explore all the agricultural possiblilities in the area. Jasper County is well known for blueberries, asparagus, corn, and pork; there is a large dairy operation a short distance away. And it's almost time to break ground for our own garden. As one of my favorite authors says "The game is afoot!"

Oh, I love the photos! If only.... Well, staying in the present: you need to add to your list of local favorites: black raspberries and blackberries. You just have to beat the birds to them. Oh, and survive the mosquitoes while picking. And the thorn scratches. And I suppose we need to add beating the Great Pyrenees to the list. But the berries really are worth the adventure :>)
